Palm Beach is the destination of choice for many of the USA's elite. The Town of Palm Beach is set on a narrow island nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The town covers an area 14 miles (22 kilometres) long and only half a mile (less than a kilometre) wide.

 

Palm Beach history dates back to the early 1890s, when Henry Morrison Flagler – a partner in Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller – visited the sandy island and decided to build a great hotel. To make it easily accessible, he committed to extending his Florida East Coast Railroad south to Lake Worth.

 

The town quickly became established as a luxury residential and resort enclave – with a population that now varies from 19,000 to 40,000, depending on the season. The focal point is Worth Avenue – lined with designer boutiques, restaurants and galleries, and known as one of world’s most prestigious shopping streets.
